Horizon Foundation Awards Grant to Millhill Child and Family Development for Trenton PEERS
TRENTON, NJ (July 3, 2018) – Millhill Child & Family Development recently received a grant from Horizon Foundation to support the Trenton PEERS program. The gift from the Horizon Foundation will enable Millhill to continue to provide educational, leadership and mentoring support in a peer to peer format to thousands of at-risk teens throughout Trenton.
“We are thrilled to renew our partnership with Horizon Foundation to continue the Trenton PEERS program and empower Trenton teens to build a path for a brighter future while serving as role models in the community,” explains Michelle Thompkins, associate director of youth services.
The Trenton PEERS (Performing, Educating, and Engaging about Responsible Strategies) is a year-round peer education, mentoring and support group made up of two mixed gender teams of young adults, ages 13 – 18. The goal of the program is to empower the Trenton PEERS to realize their potential by providing year round life skills education, leadership training, and college preparation in a supportive environment. The PEERS serve as positive role models in their community and provide potentially life-saving presentations to thousands of adolescent peers in Trenton.
The platform has helped PEERS build confidence, discipline and determination throughout their own lives. In a city where 68% of youth graduate from High School it is notable that 100% of PEERS graduate from High School on time and go on to higher education programs.
“PEERS got me to be more proud of who I am, where I came from, and where I’m going,” states Patience, PEER Alumni and Kean University student.
