Millhill Child & Family Development receives grant from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey to fund Health Literacy and Obesity Prevention

TRENTON, NJ (July 21, 2020) Millhill Child & Family Development received grant funding in support our Health Literacy and Obesity Prevention Program, from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. The grant will fund health literacy and obesity education through health and nutrition instruction, engaging staff in health education and providing Millhill Medical Home Link and health screenings to children. Horizon provided additional funding to help support Trenton families whose challenges to maintaining health have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Millhill is excited to continue our partnership with The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey to bring health literacy and obesity prevention to our children and families,” explains Cynthia Oberkofler, Executive Director.

Funding enables Millhill to infuse health and nutrition education into the Therapeutic Intervention Parenting Program. Specific topics will include: nutritious foods, physical education, disease and obesity prevention what to expect during a doctor’s visit, trying new foods, and more.

With the additional funding to support families during this unprecedented time, care packages were distributed to 100 Millhill families, each package filled with supplies that supports health needs and promotes exercise. The packages included a first aid kit, a water tumbler to promote healthy drinking, a pedometer and jump rope to encourage movement, a coloring book with crayons for some added fun, along other items to encourage health and wellbeing.

Children will be engaged in Health Literacy through monthly programming that provides services for critically underserved children from age two through age six. Millhill’s registered nurse is virtually available to families to evaluate and follow up with each at-risk child – most of whom would not otherwise be able to afford these extensive assessments.

“We are pleased to support Millhill,” said Jonathan R. Pearson, Executive Director of The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. “The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey works closely with grantees who share our commitment to improving the health and communities we serve throughout New Jersey.”
